With the seemingly unending selection of baby proofing tools and items available it is hard to seperate the ‘must haves’ from the ‘nice to haves’.  When you are babyproofing on a budget consider your personal situation.  The layout of your home, the number of children in your house, the ages of your children, pets in the home, and the number of distractions you have in your house all play a factor in your babyproofing decisions.

Here are 10 baby proofing items you "must" have to keep the baby safe, beyond these items consider your own situation and the risks in your home to decide if the should be on your ‘must have’ or your ‘nice to have’ list.

1. A Good Gate: Even if you are living in a ranch-style home or an apartment with no stairs, there will be rooms or areas you'll not want your baby getting into, so an excellent gate is definitely a must-have babyproofing purchase.

2. A Blind Winder: The number of toddlers strangled every year because of dangling blind or shade cords is devastating. In fact, the Customer Product Safety Commission lists cords as one of the "hidden risks" parent's don't even think of. There are numerous cheap blind winders out there, but if you have to manually re-wind the cord right after every use, then chances are you won't use it.

3. Anti-Tip Anchors: If you have a climber (or potential climber) on your hands, furniture straps are a must. Whether it's a dresser or a bookshelf, attach these weighty pieces of furniture to the wall with anti-tip connectors to prevent the furniture from tipping over.

4. Fireplace Safety: Hard stone around the fireplace hearth can be very hazardous with little ones close to. Its sharp edges and rough stone corners can cut, and seriously hurt the tripping child. You must choose one of the numerous good hearth bumper pads available in the marketplace.

5. Corner Edge Bumpers: You can protect the corners of your end-tables and coffee tables with corner and side guards. For many of these items one-size-fits all because you cut the foam to fit your particular table exactly.

6. Outlet Covers: For used outlets with cords, you can buy a cover which will prevent your infant from unplugging the cord and touching the prongs or the electrical outlet. There are also covers with sliding blockers, which are best for outlets where you will be inserting and un-plugging items often.  For outlets used more rarely, the cheaper plastic plugs are suitable but be sure to choose ones that are large enough not to be a chocking hazard.

7. Childproof Latches for Cabinets and Drawers: Drawer latches are also an essential-have for childproofing your home. They may prevent your child from opening drawers and cupboards with toxic, sharp or tiny items stored within. Ideal for the kitchen, bathroom, or home office. Choose childproof latches that won't let your little one to get even a hand inside.

8. Railing Net: Stair as well as railing nets are a must if the railing spindles are further than 2.5 to 3 inches apart.

9. Baby Monitor - A good quality monitor will be quite sensitive and allow parents to monitor at a minimum the sounds in their babies bedroom. For more peace of mind video monitors as well as breathing/movement monitors are available.

10. Bath tub Safety Items: Bath-time is always thrilling for a growing baby. Keep it risk-free by using a few of these little accessories.

    • A bathtub thermometer to gauge water temperature.
    • A bathtub safety rail to help your own little one get in and out from the tub safely.
    • A faucet cover that will protect from nasty bumps.

These are the most critical baby safety gear items for every home. Consider them as an important investment you will make in the years of growth and exploration still ahead of you.
