10 Facts You Should Know About Mace

Mace is one of many brands of CN tear gas. It is a well-recognized trade name that is used by both civilians as well as by the police. While the former may use it to ward off strangers from attacking, the latter use it to dispel unruly crowds.

Mace is tear gas in an aerosol spray that shoots out chemicals that are mixed in a volatile solvent. It is useful in that it is a less life-threatening weapon for self-defense than other weapons. In case an assailant is about to overpower you, you must take care to throw the aerosol away from reach.

It should also be noted that mace is often used by terrorists to overpower crowds or unsuspecting people caught in the fray. It is commonly used by hijackers to gain quick control over passengers.

Here are 10 facts that you should know about Mace.

1 Mace chemical spray device is usually used by the police in riot control. However, most law and order agencies need appropriate personnel to be certified on knowing how to use aerosol spray devices before using Mace in the line of duty.

2 It is sometimes also used as a self-defense device. But not many countries allow Mace to be used in this form and hence may be illegal in some countries. This is why there has been a decline in recent years regarding Mace usage.

3 It can cause severe lacrimation and temporary blindness. When Mace gets sprayed directly into the face from about six feet away it causes permanent injury.

4 Original Mace formulation contained one percent CN gas in a solvent of 2-butanol, propylene glycol, cyclohexene and dipropylene glycol methyl ether. Now some formulations also include Oleoresin Capsicum.

5 It is only as recent as 1962 that Mace began being manufactured commercially under the name "Chemical Mace." It was first created by Lake Erie Chemical and is now a registered trademark of Mace Security International.

6 The Mace that is being sold today by Mace Security International is pepper spray rather than tear gas. Many other companies are now manufacturing me-too products.

7 The effect of Mace varies on humans. Most common is a burning sensation on the area affected with the spray. If it contacts the eyes it causes automatic closing of the eyes due to the intense pain.

8 You also experience a feeling of suffocating if you inhale Mace and it can cause a person to be very vulnerable and dependent, resulting in easy overpowering. This is why it is used by the police to overpower rioters.

9 Effects of Mace can be minimal on those under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

10 The duration of the effects vary from 30 minutes up to two hours, depending on the person and treatment.
