10 Home Fire Safety Tips
The homestead is an inherently important part of our lives-make sure you adhere to strict safety guidelines at all times. Fire safety should be a regular practice to help protect your home and family. Here are ten home fire safety tips to help you keep your home and family safe from accidental fires:
1 Smoke Alarms: Invest in smoke detectors that can save you from mishaps by receiving alerts in case of a fire. Smoke alarms can alert you to get to safety before things go from bad to worse. It would be wise to fix these devices in several parts of the home.
2 Automatic Water Sprinklers: Since homes are always full of some combustible material, it is wise to have a home sprinkler system in place. The automatic home water sprinkler system is among the most comprehensive fire safety equipment available.
3 Contingency Escape Plan: In case of a fire, you should be prepared for a quick exit from the house. Involve all family members in regular drills where you share the house floor plans with safe exits earmarked for every room. This plan should help all to know how to escape.
4 Caught in Fire: In case you get caught in the fire you must crawl low to stay down under the smoke. The smoke will always rise up as will the heat. Stay low and head for the exit. If escaping under smoke, remember to crawl on your hands and knees with your head just a foot or two above the floor.
5 Smoking Safety: It is a fact that very many fires get started from cigarettes. It is the most common factor responsible for fatal fires. For this reason smokers should never smoke in bed or when they are feeling sleepy.
6 Kitchen Safety: Practice safe cooking habits. Never leave the kitchen with the stove burning. If you have to leave, then turn off the burners. Do not wear loose fitting or flowing clothes that may catch fire.
7 Matches and Lighters: Keep all matches and lighters away from children; keep them high up away from reach. Better still, lock them up. Make use of child-proof lighters and have locks on the burner knobs.
8 Safety from Electricity: Keep your electrical appliances in good condition and watch out for signs of wear and tear. If you notice any fluctuation in the power current, get that attended to immediately. Be careful in using extension cords and do not allow them to trail through doorways or under furniture.
9 Room Heaters: All heating appliances, whether fixed or portable, should be kept at least a minimum of three feet away. Keep flammable objects away from heaters and turn them off when you go out or sleep at night.
Bodily Responses in Fires: In severe cases of catching fire, immediately stop, drop, and roll on the ground. If your clothes catch fire, do not run. Just stop and stay put. Drop to the ground, cover your face and roll over and over or back and forth to smother the flames.
