10 Hurricane Safety Tips

Hurricanes are destructive phenomena, affecting many parts of the world. Since they so ruthlessly destroy virtually everything in their path, it's best to be prepared with a plan to combat the disasters they cause. Here are ten necessary steps that should be taken for hurricane preparedness.

Have a checklist ready to go through in case of such a catastrophe:

1 All important papers, special photos and CD's should be secured properly. Include social security cards, birth certificates, high school diplomas, titles and deeds to property. Photos of special occasions or loved ones cannot be replaced, so including these would be a good idea too.

2 If you live in hurricane-prone area, then plan ahead and take a video or photos of your property before you leave. This will help you later with insurance claims that you'll need to file.

3 Consider booking a room in a motel in a nearby town or state. Make sure to get directions and put them in the car ahead of time. You may even head for temporary hurricane shelters or relatives.

4 You should first look for pet-friendly hotels so you can keep your pets with you. Otherwise, you'll need to find housing for your pets until it is safe to return.

5 Designate an easy-to-remember spot, such as your hall closet, to keep a bag of clothes for each person in the household. Make sure to include sleeping gear if you plan on going to a temporary shelter.

6 Organize a hurricane kit, including overnight clothes, batteries, flashlights, battery operated radio/television, bottled water, toilet paper, non-perishable foods such as crackers and canned goods (bring a can opener), candles and prescription medicines. Parents of young children should also bring diapers, baby wipes, formula and baby food.

7 The power might be out for a long time. Since ATM's may not be working, it would be a good idea to include some cash in your hurricane kit to see you through the disaster.

8 Although not absolutely necessary, board games or a deck of cards will come in handy, helping you keep your children occupied and entertained. Crafts and crayons are always great distractions for kids as well. Store some in your tote bag or car trunk.

9 And if you decide to stay with your home, plywood is great material for you to have on hand. Boarding up windows to keep wind and rain from battering your home is an effective frontline. If boards are not available, protect your windows from the wind by crisscrossing them with layers of duct or packing tape.

10 Finally, if you do decide to weather out the storm, then stay inside and stay put. However tempting it may be to videotape or take photos of the storm, be sure to shoot from indoors.
