It’s quite unsettling, but more than 200,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest every year—that’s in the U.S alone! The surprising and depressing fact is that approximately 50,000 of these cardiac arrest deaths could actually have been prevented if they had received the right treatment during the cardiac arrest. Specifically, if these 50,000 or so people had had the benefit of experiencing the Cardiac Chain of Survival and used an automated external defibrillator (AED), then they would have stood a significantly improved chance of survival. However, since these items are needed for immediate use at the time of the arrest, this large annual number has gone unchecked for too long.

But because saving a life can sometimes be as simple as owning your own personal automated external defibrillator unit, organizations such as The American Red Cross have been trying to spread the word about just how vital these units can be. If every household across the nation were to purchase one of these items to store within their home or even their vehicle, then we could significantly reduce the number of annual cardiac arrests. They make use of a simple controlled electric shock that forces the heart muscles to start contracting in unison, which jump starts the heart back into normal activity.

Although the latest models are being built with non professional users in mind, non medical individuals should still receive professional training before they try using one of these items in an actual emergency situation—if used wrong, they can actually cause more harm than good.
