Apartment Safety and Security

Safety and security is just as important for people who live in an apartment as those who reside in a standalone home. And while apartment dwellers cannot implement safety features that change the design or components of the rental, plenty of security steps and measures are available to keep a family safe in a rental apartment. If you are looking for ways to boost the security of your apartment, then make use of some of our tips.

  1. Renters who have not yet signed a lease on an apartment can research the safety statistics in the area to determine if it is a high crime area. Crime data is available online as well as from the local police station.
  2. If possible, never choose a ground floor unit when moving into a new apartment as those units are targets for burglaries and home invasions more often than units on higher floors.
  3. Never leave your apartment unlocked, whether at night or any other time of day. Home invasions and burglaries can happen at any time and an unlocked door makes your apartment an easy target for such things. Additionally, if you live in a complex with gated courtyards and entrances, make certain that gates properly latch and close behind you.
  4. Always use the peephole on your door before opening it when someone knocks or rings the bell. Even if you are expecting someone, this is a good habit that can keep you safe.
  5. Windows should also be kept locked since burglars often enter into homes through the windows. And never leave windows open while you are away from the apartment.
  6. Some apartment complexes allow renters to change the locks on the unit. If your property manager allows this, then you should get a new lock for the door to ensure that you are the only person with a key. Or, you can ask that the locks be changed before you move into the unit.
  7. When coming home after sundown, park your vehicle in a well-lit area outside your apartment. As you make your way from the parking lot to your apartment, stick with paths that have good lighting and do not have a lot of shrubs, bushes or dark corners where someone can hide.
  8. Install an ADT home security alarm system if your apartment complex allows it. Some complexes are pre-wired for alarm systems and all you have to do is contact the security system company to get the alarm activated.
  9. If your apartment has a sliding glass door, then this is an easy entry point into your home. Install a security bar in the door to prevent any would-be intruders from breaking into the apartment. Even just a simple metal or wood block can help prevent access via the sliding glass door.

  11. Never leave a key hidden outside for guests, such as in a planter, as burglars know to look for these. Instead, leave a key with the property manager.
