Baby Safety PinsClick Here to See Our Selection of Baby Safety Pins Baby safety pins have been used for decades to fasten diapers and hold things together. Safety pins in general have been around since the late 1890's. The invention of these items is attributed to a man named Walter Hunt, who used the invention to pay off a debt. They became popular because they could be used on clothes that were being worn or handled without fear of being jabbed. The metal head holds the pointed wire securely and was changed to a full plastic head for babies in order to reduce the metal edges that might scrape or irritate. These items are usually composed of hardened brass or high carbon steel. They can then be coated with another metal or painted a different color. Most of them are between one and two inches long, while regular safety pins can be anywhere from ¾ of an inch to three inches long. They also tend to use slightly thicker wire in their construction so that it is less likely to tear through fabric. These pins have seen a definite decline in use in the last few decades. Disposable diapers have become far more popular because of their convenience and sanitation. Since cloth diapers have gone out of use, so too have these types of pins. But in the last few years there has been a small resurgence of cloth diapers and and child safety pins, due largely to the push to be environmentally friendly. Some parents avoid disposable diapers because they want to reduce waste that goes to landfills.
