Fevers in young children can be extremely dangerous, so learning how to correctly take a child's temperature using a baby thermometer is very important. There are several ways to take an infants temperature using a baby thermometer including axillary (by using the armpits), rectally (using the rectum), or by using an infrared thermometer. The prior two methods both require either a digital thermometer, or a mercury thermometer. And the last requires an infrared thermometer that is much more expensive, but easier to use, and less invasive. These three baby thermometers all require slightly different methods, but before using the mercury thermometer, be sure to shake it until it reaches 95.9 degrees. If this step is not completed every time the thermometer is used, the results will not be accurate. Each of these baby thermometers uses a different technology, and some have been proven to be more accurate than others. However, every type of thermometer will work well enough for you to know if your child is getting a fever or not. If your child does have a sure, contact your doctor immediately. Fevers can be immensely dangerous for children, causing brain damage, and possibly death.
