It isn't necessary to keep the electrical cord plugged in at all times, and ideally the cord and hose should be disconnected when not in use. However, Utility Line was specifically engineered to withstand the cold and even if hose is left to freeze with water inside, it will only take about five to ten minutes to thaw once plugged-in.
