Pools, the beach, and lakes are some of the best places to go, and provide some of the best memories. The only downside is that water can be extremely dangerous without proper safety measures, especially for children. The best way for children to be safe in the water, is to learn how to swim. This obviously takes time, but getting a head start will allow your child to be comfortable in the water, and be able to do much more around any body of water. Teach your children some general rules about water safety such as swimming when a lifeguard is on duty, obeying the rules, don't swim in bad weather, don't dive, and know how to recognize emergencies. These tips can keep your child educated about water safety, but will not keep them safe around water. The only thing that can keep your child, or anyone, truly safe around water is learning to swim. The better you can swim, the better able you are to adapt to changing situations in the water. The last, and most important rule about water safety for children, is to never swim without an adult unless the child can touch every part of the pool without going under the water. While lifeguards do their job to the best of their ability, they can easily look over a drowning child, so be sure to never leave your child's side in the water, until they are a decent swimmer.
