Easy Ways to Make Your Pool and Pool Area More Safe
If you are lucky enough to have a swimming pool, you can use it as the main focal point in your backyard. But it also creates a major responsibility, especially when it comes to ensuring that the pool is both fun and safe.
Here are some useful tips to ensure pool safety:
. Construct a fence around the pool: A fence is a must around the pool area, preventing kids from going into the pool unattended. Build your fence to at least 1.5 meters/5 feet in height and ensure that it does not enable access to the pool without using the gate.
. Maintain the fence and gate: Once you have your fence in place, ensure that there are no deficiencies and that the fence and gate are working as they should be. Make regular checks (at least monthly) to ensure all is well. For your gate, mount the self-closing latch on the outside of the gate, so the gate swings away from the pool.
. Cover the poolside with non-slip surfaces: Although there should be a no-running rule, accidents do happen and it is better to try and guard against slipping by using a good surface.
. Automatic or manual safety covers: These non-penetrating covers completely canvas the pool, blocking access to the water from angles. You'll also be able to find hard covers that can hold the weight of a child or small adult and are much safer. . Pool alarms: Another good layer of protection is a pool alarm. This will alert you if a child falls into the pool and there's nobody around. The alarm sits on the side of the pool and is activated by change in water movement. When the surface of the pool is disturbed by a falling child it will set off the pool alarm and send a signal to a remote unit placed inside the home.
. Emergency information and safety kit: A first-aid kit is always a good idea to keep in a safe and convenient location. Periodically, check to make sure the kit is well stocked with all the essentials. Most importantly, remember to post all CPR, emergency contact information and warning signs in a visible spot near the pool. You and your family may even choose to perform regular pool safety drills to remind everyone what to do and where to go in the event of emergency.
. Outside telephone: A cordless phone is convenient for placing poolside, providing the means to place a quick call for help or information without having to leave the pool area.
. Toys, games, floats, etc.: These provide countless hours of fun and enjoyment for everyone. Make sure that all devices are safe and age appropriate for each individual. Never leave any toys or games in or around the pool. Put them away for security and for safety.
. Cleaners, chemicals and maintenance: All cleaning and maintenance supplies should be kept in a locked storage area, away from children and pets. Always check supply labels for proper storage requirements and expiration dates.
Keep in mind no matter how good these products are and even when you have installed several layers of protection, nothing is better than strict supervision.
