Over fifty percent of homes in the United States have guns, usually for safety purposes. The problem with guns in the home is that they cause a safety risk to everyone in the family, especially children. It has been proven that guns are the leading cause of death and injury in children, and that while guns are mainly purchased for safety, they are forty three times more likely to injure or kill a family member than an intruder. These facts stress the importance of gun safety in the home. While educating family members about gun safety in the home, a more effective way of keeping everyone safe is to restrict access to guns by storing them properly. Practicing gun home safety is the only way to keep your children relatively safe from firearms. However, to truly make sure your children will not injure themselves or others with firearms, they should not be stored in your home. There a number of ways you can keep your guns safe in the home including gun cases, trigger locks, and teaching your children not to handle firearms without adult supervision. The goal is to keep your children away from firearms, and when they do use them, be sure you are around to supervise and teach them accordingly.
