In order to promote home safety, you should follow a simple home safety checklist. Your checklist should include basic things. A checklist can be performed by anybody in the home, and it should be referred to on a regular basis to make sure all safety considerations are kept up to date. The checklist should include the following: fresh batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, childproof locks on cabinets, childproof caps on chemicals or cleaning supplies, childproof caps on all medications, safety gates blocking stares, and locks on doors. Your checklist can also include a home security system.

There are many books that you can purchase that are dedicated to helping homeowners develop their own safety lists. Most checklists include the same sort of items. You can go through your own home with a careful eye and make your own, private checklist. Your checklist can be unique to your home, family, and situation. For example, some people do not need to worry about the items that pertain to stairs, basements, attics, or cellars.
