How to Create a Fire Escape Plan

Everybody should know the do's and dont's in the event of a fire. In a fire situation, every second counts. To aid with early detection of fires, install smoke detectors near your sleeping areas. If you have a multi-story house, install smoke detectors at each level in the home. In spite of taking all the right safety measures, if you still experience a fire in your home or surroundings, follow some simple steps of a fire escape plan to get out safe.

Fire Escape Plan

A home escape plan must be created and practiced so that each person knows exactly what to do. It also is important to practice exit drills in the home. To get out of the house safe, familiarize yourself with at least two exits from each room, for example, one window and one door. Know where the exits are and practice using them.

Get all the family into a room from where it would be safest to drop from a window; onto a flat roof or into the garden. Hang from a second story window or drop feet first to the ground. If you have sleeping areas located on the second floor, provide an escape ladder or rope. Check these carefully to make certain they are safe.

Check windows that would be used in an escape to see that they open easily. If your windows are double glazed, use a heavy object and hit the window in a bottom corner. Make any jagged edges safe with a towel or blanket. Have a meeting place located just outside the fire site. A fire is no time to be worrying about who made it out and who did not. By establishing a central meeting place outside the house, you can count heads and not have to wonder who might still be inside.

Never go back inside for any reason once you are outside. The fire department will be there in a matter of minutes. Stay at the meeting place and wait for the fire department to come. If you do get caught in the smoke though, make sure you crawl on the floor. Smoke rises up so stay close to the floor where the air will be less toxic. Use the fire escape or an enclosed fire-resistant stairwell to exit.

The above points cover the most useful tips and advise regarding how to create a fire escape plan, and provide you with the best chances of survival.
