How To Prevent Sports Injuries
Playing sports is a great way to get physically active and stay healthy . Sports injuries can put you on the sidelines so here are some tips to avoid being injured while playing.
Some the most common sports injuries are muscle and tendon tears. To prevent these it is very important to stretch and warm up your body before playing. An easy jog around the gym or field followed by stretching each muscle zone (legs, arms and shoulders, neck and back, and abdominals) will ensure that your heart rate rises slowly and each muscle group is limber and ready to engage in more strenuous activity. Warm muscles are less vulnerable to injuries. Allowing your body to cool down gradually after your activity can also reduce muscle pain and tenderness. If your uniform is wet or damp change into something warm and dry before going out into cold temperatures.
Another important factor in staying safe while playing sports is to have, and wear, the right safety equipment and protective gear. Be sure that your equipment fits you properly by following the manufacturer’s specifications. Check your gear periodically to ensure it is not worn, torn, or broken. If you wear prescription eyewear consider investing in prescription safety glasses. An impact to your regular prescription glasses can cause the frame to break and those sharp metal or plastic pieces can cause serious injury to your eye.
Very strenuous activity will quickly deplete your body of fluids and electrolytes. Plenty of water or sports drinks are required.
Outdoor sports require special considerations. Sunscreen and insect repellent provide important protection. Be sure to choose ones that are ‘sweat-proof’. Water and snow sports require additional sun protection as the sun’s glare off the water or snow creates additional potential for burning.
Athletes with sequential days of training and exercise have more injuries. Rest is a necessity for proper training and it can make you stronger by refreshing your body. Take notice of warning signs your body gives you.
If you have an injury it is important to be cleared by your physician before resuming play in your sport. Your doctor may recommend a brace, wrap, or other protection for your weakened area to protect it while it heals and to prevent re-injury.
