Moped Safety Tips

Mopeds have the ability to get you from point A to point B with an extreme convenience not often found in today’s motor vehicles. But their convenience comes through a form factor that also demands a greater degree of respect for safety. Read on to find out a few essential moped safety tips to make sure you continue to ride safely and have as much fun as possible on these quick little machines.

It’s important to note that proper moped safety begins before you even get out on the road. You’ll need to make sure you have the right safety gear and apparel in order to prevent some harmful repercussions. Buy yourself a quality helmet that is rated for road use. Some helmets are designed more for the sake of style and decoration than they are for protection, so take a careful look at the materials used and any associated safety standards met in their construction. Complement this vital piece of safety gear with durable clothing items such as leather jackets and leather chaps. You can easily find pants and chaps that feature convenient snaps that allow you to quickly remove them and still wear your street clothes underneath. Top this safe traveling outfit off by getting yourself a quality pair of moped goggles to make sure you maintain a perfect field of vision and protect your eyes from flying debris and insects.

Another thing to consider before you hit the road is the maintenance of your moped. All the safety apparel in the world won’t make a difference if your moped’s actual mechanics and parts aren’t up to spec. Regardless of whether you rode your moped yesterday or two weeks ago, always take a couple minutes to inspect it before you start out. Check tire pressure to insure that you have optimal control of your moped. You should also check your gauges to insure that your oil levels and pressure are sufficient. And, of course, check to see that you have sufficient fuel or in the case of electric mopeds, have a sufficient charge before heading out on longer road trips.

Check your mirrors! It can be easy for riders to lose themselves in self confidence and ride with a bit of abandon knowing that they can more than handle their moped. But riding like this fails to keep other drivers in consideration. Make sure you always check your mirrors before changing lanes to make sure that you don’t merge into another vehicle. Similarly, never assume another driver sees you—always follow and pass with a safe buffer between you.
