Pool and water safety is a major concern for parents of small children, especially if they have a private pool in their yard. But water safety extends beyond a private pool in the backyard. This type of safety is important if your family enjoys any sort of water sports, like boating, fishing, surfing, sailing, or even camping on lakes. Water safety is also important if you live near a river or an irrigation ditch, and even for simple tasks such as taking a bath or playing in a wading pool. You and your children should be aware of some basic rules.
The first key part is blocking access to any unsupervised body of water, whether that body of water is a pool, a pond, a river, or a ditch. You can block access to these bodies of water with fences, walls, or simple pool alarms. The second key part is teaching your children how to swim. Even young babies, as small as a year old, can learn the basics of swimming, such as how to float, or staying calm if you fall into a pool. Check out local pubic swimming pools to see if they offer courses to small children.
