![]() Chapter 1: How to Baby Proof Your HomeWhen you have a baby you want to make sure that your house is safe for the baby. There are many tips to keep in mind when you start to baby proof your home. Keep in mind as your baby becomes more mobile there may be more things around the house that need to be adjusted to keep your baby safe. You can research baby safety tips on the internet or in books on raising children. Make sure to prepare the house in advance of the baby being able to crawl so there are no accidents that could have been prevented. Consider your child’s age to decide what steps you should take to make your house baby proofed. If they are a new baby under three months of age make sure that their crib is safe and meets safety protocol. The next step is to make sure that the bed of the crib does not move around (it should only move a tiny bit) as you do not want your baby to slide under the bed and suffocate. Another important consideration is the style of the crib. Some cribs have places where a baby could stick their head into and end up not being able to get their head out of that area. A baby could also choke if they could not get their head out of those areas or if the crib had areas where clothing could get stuck and choke the child, as well. Also make sure that the crib is well built so that there is no risk of the crib breaking and injuring or killing the baby. Babies cannot have cushions, soft toys, or anything that might suffocate them. If the baby is older than three months there are different tips to follow as the infant becomes mobile through crawling and then walking. Make sure that there is nothing lying around on the floor especially little things as children may choke on them. Another safety tip is to remove anything that a baby could remove from an item or a part of the house and put in their mouth. Any and everything that is within a baby’s reach is a possible choking hazard. When it comes to hazardous liquids make sure to put them in a place that is out of a baby’s reach as well as secured so that even if the baby can reach it they will not be able to have access to such liquids. Hazardous liquids can include any drinks you may have that include alcohol. Make sure that sockets in the house are covered so that a baby cannot get electrocuted. You can install baby gates if there is an area that you do not want your infant to be. Remember to research baby safety tips so that your house will be prepared for the baby. Keep in mind that as the child grows there will be different home safety tips to follow. Children can be safe with the right precautions put into effect for them.
