Chapter 3: How to Prepare Your Home for an Earthquake

Earthquakes are a common natural disaster in this day and age. Many people do not think of an earthquake happening near their home and how they can be safe. It is important to be prepared for all natural disasters that could potentially happen near or in your home. There are classes which teach people how to prepare for a variety of natural disasters including earthquakes. Make sure that you and your family are prepared for an earthquake with the materials and knowledge needed to survive and not get hurt if such a situation were to arise.

Way before an earthquake strikes near your neighborhood make sure to figure out where you will be safest and what you will need after it is over. There is the possibility of injury so make sure that a first aid kit is within easy access after the earthquake. Make sure you understand how to do first aid and know what all the supplies are prior to an earthquake. When you have an idea of what needs to be done if an earthquake strikes you can exercise the plan to make sure that everyone in the house would be prepared for such an emergency. This includes going to the area where you would be safe and practicing any position you would have to be in to be safe. You can even quiz the family to see if they know what needs to be done in the event of an earthquake.

In the event of an earthquake there are places that you do not want to be and places that are considered a safer alternative. You will not want to be by anything that could break and end up injuring you. You will not want to be by glass or things that could fall on you. When an earthquake hits you will want to be in areas that are closed off and do not have glass or things that can fall.

Be prepared to have food and beverages that would last in an emergency. You will want food that is non-perishable so that you will not get sick off of the food. Water is an important beverage to have stored away in case you are not able to use your sink or get water from other sources.

Research how close you are to any fault lines and if the fault line has been active in recent years. This way you can figure out if the fault line will cause an earthquake in the near future. One never knows if an earthquake will happen but if you are near a fault line you have a better chance of preparing for such an emergency. Anyone can prepare the house for an earthquake just in case it happens. Make sure to keep a kit of things you will need for an earthquake in the event that it happens you will be prepared and less likely to suffer due to this preparation.
