Chapter 8: How to Prepare for a Tornado

It is important to be prepared for natural disasters as one can never be sure when one will happen. All year round there are severe storms including tornadoes that can damage a home or cause injury or death to people. Consider preparing for a natural disaster no matter what month of the year it is. There are storms all year that can take out power, water, and be times when it is unsafe to buy food or other supplies for a storm. Make sure to get the preparations that you need way before a severe storm hits in your locality.

Tornadoes are a common natural disaster that can strike at anytime. They can be very dangerous to you and your family, as well as your home. You want to take every precaution so that you and your family will be able to deal with the tornado. If you and your family are at home for a tornado you can find an area of the house that would be safe. If you are not at home find a place you can go into and find a safe spot. A safe spot is an area of the house that does not have glass or things hanging that could fall and break resulting in injuries. The lower you are in the house is also better.

When you suspect that weather is going to be severe turn on a weather program and see what if a tornado is coming. This way you can know how close the tornado is and when you should get in the safe spots of your home. Have the family practice where they would go for a tornado so everyone feels prepared for such an occasion.

Consider when you know that a tornado is coming to strap down items outside or bring them inside so they are out of the storm. Make sure to put the items in a safe spot of the house so if windows break the items will not be blown away. Once the items are stored away make sure that you and your family are in the safe areas of the home until you get word that the tornado has passed.

After the storm passes you may not have power or water. Make sure to have supplies for if the power was to go out. Also make sure to have water in case the water is not working or is dirty. Food is also important to have as when the power goes out food in the refrigerator or freezer may go bad due to bacterial growth and rotting.

Make sure to know how to treat injuries with a First Aid course. Also have a kit in case someone gets injured in the tornado. Having knowledge of how to use the supplies in the kit will make the injury less severe and less prone to infection if it is an open wound. Make sure to take precautions so your family is safe if a tornado strikes.
