Used to help dress broken bones, they help support the area of the body that a broken bone would usually carry. Unless these are used, in many circumstances it can be extremely painful for an injured person to move at all. A broken arm may be easily fixed at a hospital, but getting there could be very difficult without one of these, especially if you are outdoors.
